So I started to get together some of the hardware that I have lying about to get my testing rig up and running.
The spec is currently this:
CPU:
Intel E3 1220V2
Motherboard:
Asus P8-Z77-M Pro
Memory:
Generic 2 x 2GB DDR3
Disk:
128GB Samsung 840 Evo
Graphics card:
Geforce GTX 750 Ti
The decision around the graphics card was probably the one that took me the longest. I have lying around an ATI 6850 and a 7870TE. From my research on the net it would appear that Nvidia is doing better with their proprietary drivers. However it would appear that Maxwell based cards don't get support out of the box with Ubuntu.
What do you guys think? Anything glaring stupid that I haven't considered Have you had experience with a similar config? I would love to know your thoughts.

Requirements
So the very first part of my new adventure is boring thought exercise, what would I like to do on my main computer. As mentioned in my first post I like to play games on my pc, though just to clarify, I am not a pro must have one million frames per second gamer.
Anyways this is the list I have come up with so far.
Anyways this is the list I have come up with so far.
- World of Warcraft
- Eve Online
- CS:GO
- Voice coms for above (Teamspeak / Ventrillo / Mumble)
- VMware player / workstation
- General web surfing
I dont store any data locally as I have my nas setup for the that as long as I can access the shares on that.
I cant think of anything more at this very minute but will amend my list as I go along.
Can I live with Linux on my main desktop?
For some weird reason every few years I start to wonder if Windows is the only real option for my desktop needs. Don't get me wrong, I am not a Microsoft hater, having used windows 3.1 all the way to installing the new Windows 10 Technical preview just the other day, I just feel the need to try something different.
So the itch began and with the likes of Steam and Ubuntu gaming under Linux has from what I have read gotten better. I will be running a series of posts documenting my experience this time round.
